| In the Senior cycle science divides into three distinct subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and students have a choice of studying one or more of them. Over the years numerous students have entered the Young Scientists' Exhibition which is held each January in the RDS and several of our students have won prestigious scholarships to universities and other third level colleges in the science area. Salters Competition Four First Year students from St Joseph's College won first prize in the Salters Festival of Chemistry practical challenge which took place in Trinity College, Dublin on Saturday, 26th May 2001. The aim of the competition is to make chemistry more interesting and attractive to Junior cycle students. This competition was one of three that took place at universities in Ireland and 31 that took place in the UK between March and June 2001. Competing with schools from all over the country the team of four girls held their own. Team members, Terrie Lynch, Elaine Long, Claire Dooley and Sarah Ryan, under the guidance of their teacher - Mrs Grainne Blake, took the role of Forensic Chemists and used chemistry tests to solve the mystery of the Chalkwell Murder case. Each team was provided with the police report, information about the suspects, exhibits A-E and a map of the area involved. The practical work took approximately 2 hours and consisted of testing the metal and non-metal samples. To conclude the test the team produced result sheets and a forensic report outlining their conclusion as to who was the leading suspect. It was a fantastic experience for the students and a great chance to work in an extremely well equipped laboratory. This is the second year that the school has entered this competition. The previous year our school team won the Irish competition and went on to finish second in the Chemical Egg Race which was held in York, UK. Congratulations to all these budding young scientists! |
