A compulsory Transition Year was introduced for all students in 1995. An extensive and stimulating programme of study which included vital elements of the Leaving Certificate syllabus, project work, an opportunity to acquire new skills and a wide range of extra-curricular activities  was developed by Stella Lordan, the first Transition Year Co-ordinator.   This programme was been improved and adapted by the current Transition Year Co-ordinator, Maura McCarthy,  and parents are supplied with a syllabus of the year's programme at a special Information Night at the beginning of the school year.

TY 2008/9: Musical 'Oklahoma'
Oklahoma ~ The Story so far . . . . . . .
Oklahoma is a fun, exciting musical for people of all ages. It is a lively musical with several love stories and an ongoing feud between the cowboys and farmers.  The Transition Year pupils and staff of St. Joseph's College will host the musical this year, from Tuesday 25th - Sunday 30th November. It will be a great night out for anyone seeking a good laugh. It is very interesting to see the talent in our year group. Everyone has an important role to play. The progression of the rehearsals is fantastic. From day one, when we tried singing and dancing for the auditions, to what the year has achieved now - a greater friendship among students and outstanding performances by all. The stage crew will certainly stand out in their organisation of the stage! The Art department have done a lovely job of the set. It is truly an opportunity to learn new things. We are all looking forward to the performances on stage. The directors Jimmy and Carol are putting their hearts and souls into its perfection. As we are making so much progress, we would like to say a special thanks to all the teachers, students, Jimmy, Carol & David.
