Each year a number of  Transition Year students enter the
Student Enterprise Award Scheme.  Students form groups of three or four and run a small business or service for a 3 month period.  They attend local craft fairs and a special fair is held in the school hall before Christmas at which orders are taken for their wares.  In January/February a Judging Night is held where the students display their products/services.  Three judges from the local area, who have already studied the students' Business Reports, interview all the participants and have an unenviable duty coming to their decision. Several prizes are presented and parents are invited to the presentation of these awards.  The Winners and Runners-Up go forward to the next round of the Student Enterprise Award - the South Dublin County finals.

Make-me-Up Cosmetics.

Group members: Ammara Haque, Aoife Ryan, Rebecca Reid, Sarah Tuite

Make-me-Up Cosmetics is the name of our business. As the name suggests we are a business that sell make-up as well as customised make-up bags. The make-up we sell is a reasonably priced European cosmetics brand called Essence-Cosmetics. Our make-up bags are the innovative part of our business. They are very trendy and cheap.
We conducted a survey and from doing this, we found that the majority of students said that they think it is a good idea to sell make-up and make-up bags in the school, this told us that we had many potential customers in the school.

We sold our products on a stall in our school at lunch times in a very visible area. Students could order products, buy them on the spot; pay for their orders or simply have a look at the make-up.
Our idea for products was a great one because we attend an all-girls school who are a roughly aged between 12-19 years and, most teenage girls love to possess and more importantly wear make-up.

It wasn’t easy to run the business we had to research make-up wholesalers in Dublin with good prices. We had to make out our trading and profit and loss account, we had to calculate the selling price, profit, percentage profit, etc. of our products. We had to do a lot of  marketing for which we had to go around to different year groups to inform students of our enterprise
We had a few difficulties such as communicating with customers, delayed deliveries and unpaid orders. However we overcame our difficulties successfully. We communicated with our customers and explained to them our situation and fortunately they were all very understanding. Very fortunately we did make a profit, obviously not a massive amount as our enterprise was not based on a large scale business. We were all very proud of ourselves for successfully setting up our very own business. We would have to say, this was one of the best experience of Transition Year and a memory we will always cherish in the future.
The school judging took place on evening of the 31st of January. It was a great occasion in which two judges who were outside experienced entrepreneurs from the location came to select five enterprises that would go ahead to the Dublin county finals. Luckily our team was one of the five that got through to the finals. We are really looking forward to this event which takes place in Tallaght on the 7th of March. We hope everything goes really well for us and all the other groups from our school.
